A highly decorative map of China, showing topographical views, costumes and customs, and general scenes. In this map, we see British Factories, Canton, Chinese Nobles, Chinese Soldiers, Hong Kong, and Chinese Pagoda. Engraved by J.Rapkin and published in the famous “Tallis’s Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial and Statistical”.

John Tallis is one of the most renowned English cartographers and publishers of the 19th century, despite producing only one atlas.

The Illustrated Atlas of the World was published for the 1851 Great Exhibition, and his maps are considered to be the last of the lavishly decorated and ornamental maps, works of art as much of geography.
