A fine reproduction map of Venice (historical center) contains on the bottom right corner description of the city. “Venice is built upon Piles, and contains 2108 Streets and Lanes 30,000 Houses 112 Churches, and 160 Public Fountains, with a Population of 112,000 souls. In the Laguna, there are 70 Islands which are intersected by 149 Canals and connected by 306 marble Bridges”.
