Formed into 70 Divisions by means of Circular &c. lines each Circle being 6 Furlongs or ¾ of a Mile from the next when measured in a direct line. A map of London shows how the city appeared at the turn of the 20th century. The metropolis, then the heart of a vast empire, sprawled outward from the communications artery of the River Thames.

LONDON by Thomas Moule. This map shows an oval format, the environs of London – extent: Finchley, Woolwich, Norwood, Hanwell. The surrounding decorations are comprised of a portrait of Old Father Thames at the bottom center, cornucopias representing the commerce, agriculture, and riches of the Capital and surrounding districts. The vignettes are of New London Bridge, Hammersmith Suspension Bridge, The New Post Office, and Triumphal [Marble] Arch. Noted as the rarest of Moule’s maps.

Laurie and Whittle’s map of London and its environs stretching from Islington to Camberwell and Bow to Paddington, an area now completely engulfed by the urban sprawl. The proposed sites of Vauxhall and Waterloo bridges are denoted by dotted lines, and the area of the city is delineated with a red line. The title contained within an attractive cartouche with a beehive, man-o-war, and the Union Jack and City arms symbolising the might and riches of the centre of the then rapidly expanding British Empire.

LONDON, 1772 – A Plan of the city and liberties of London, showing the extent of the Dreadful Conflagration in the Year 1666.

The excised detail leaves a clear outline of the streets of the seventeenth century City, and the principal sites and buildings are given in keyed indices. The map is based on an earlier map by Wenceslaus Hollar, and was originally produced for John Noorthouck’s part-work “A New History of London” (London: 1772-1773).
